Aflatoxin M1 is what a cow's liver makes from aflatoxin B1 in mouldy feed, typically maize and concentrate stored through a hot, humid summer, and it passes into the milk within hours. IARC classifies aflatoxin M1 as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B) and aflatoxin B1, from which it forms, as carcinogenic (Group 1). Milk has a legal limit for it, and neither pasteurisation nor processing removes it, so the only defence is to catch it at intake. A test line darker than the control line is negative. A test line as faint as the control, or missing, is positive. To keep a record, cut off the immersed end, dry the strip and file it, or scan it in the reader.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWhat ILVO found.\u003c\/strong\u003e On 60 replicates of milk spiked at the EU level of 50 ng\/L the kit gave no false negatives, with a mean reading of 49 ng\/L. On 201 farm and tanker samples the false-positive rate was 2.5 %, and every initial positive retested negative, so ILVO advises retesting a positive twice before acting on it. The test reads slightly high in low-fat milk and slightly low in acidified milk. It is validated on raw cow's milk; ILVO does not recommend it for sterilised milk or ewes' milk, where it read low.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is a screening test.
